CRITICAL ANALYTICAL IMPACT OF AVR AND PSS ON STABILITY OF POWER SYSTEMS

In a power system network, electrical loads are always dynamically changing. This variation may be as a result of load demands or faults on the network. The result of these changes gives rise to instability in the terminal voltage and frequency. This paper examines the impact of Automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and power system stabilizer (PSS) on a typical power system network. The result shows that AVR alone may stabilize the terminal voltage but brings instability to rotor angles and speed. The inclusion of PSS stabilizes the system within the linearized region.
