This paper examines the core of the wireless infrastructure problem, how to find, track, and send data to mobile Internet nodes. These issues come about because of mobile nodes roaming between Internet domains, often in power-down mode, along with the need to perform vertical handoffs for seamless coverage. The Internet, which has been designed for fixed nodes, needs real improvement in order to deal with this new wireless Internet trend. The main contribution of this paper is in the development of a new protocol, Cellular IPv6, to deal with wireless access routing, handoffs, and paging. First an overview of general wireless access routing technologies and techniques is given. The design of Cellular IPv6 is then examined in detail. Cellular IP Route Optimisation, a technique for improving Cellular IP performance, is also introduced in the paper. This modification to the Cellular IP standard solves triangle routing problems, improving performance in the presence of intra- domain traffic. Preliminary simulation results for this technique are presented and discussed.
