Abstract

The role of the HVDC in contemporary and future electricity is experiencing a tremendous increase with the worldwide evolution of the electric power sector size, structures and complexity. Its application based on power electronics technology makes it an alternative transmission facility to the HVAC transmission as much as its implementation as tie-line is increasingly gaining significance. This paper examines the viability considerations required for the planning, installation and operation of the HVDC for modern power applications. It enumerates the implication in terms of economy, environmental impact, converter layout and its protection and control. Its potent advantage
necessitates the increasing relevance of the HVDC technology for connections of asynchronous systems and oceanic electric power transmission.
