THE ROLE OF THE AFRICAN NOVELIST IN NATION BULDING A THEMATIC STUDY OF “VEHI-CIOSANE” BY SEMBENE OUSMANE
The African writer must have to reposition his literary vision towards solving the world globalÂ problems which include bad governance and other social vices prevalent in his society. AlmostÂ all the nations of the world including Nigeria is in one way or another bedeviled by these bitingÂ social ills. Undemocratic governance, financial crisis, lack of access to quality education,Â religious crisis, erosion of national consciousness, economic downturn constitute the other of theÂ day. In the face of all these, it becomes expedient that the African novelist should pick up hisÂ literary weapon and be on the vanguard to redress the ailing situation. The focus of this paper isÂ therefore to draw the attention of the African novelist towards developing the type of literatureÂ capable of addressing the nagging problems of his society. In this study, we have undertaken aÂ thematic study of Sembene Ousmans famous novel Vehi-Ciosane. So as to examine to whatÂ extent and in what manner this celebrated African writer was able to address the problems of hisÂ Senegalese society. This paper recommends that African writers should refocus their workÂ towards the burning issues in their society.
