CROSSING BORDERS: The Humanities, Migration and Identity
This is a Special Edition of the Journal of Modern European Languages and Literatures (JMEL), dedicated to celebrating the distinguished academic career, scholarship, and mentorship of Professor Theodora Ukamaka Onuko.
Anchored on the central theme "Crossing Borders," the volume interrogates how the Humanities help us understand, translate and interprete the complex experiences of migration, displacement, belonging, and identity formation in a globalized world: A reflection of the diversity of Professor Theodora Ukamaka Onuko's scholarly contributions to society.
This Special Edition of the Journal is organized around six Sub-themes:
§ Migration, Diaspora and Transnational Identity — Movement, exile, home and hybrid identities.
§ 2. Language, Literature and Cultural Memory — How translation and interpretations of language and stories preserve and transmit cultural heritage across borders.
§ 3. Gender, Belonging and Social Justice — Intersection of gender, marginality and the search for justice.
§ Oral Traditions and Postcolonial Narratives — Indigenous knowledge systems, orality and counter-narratives to colonial discourse.
§ Arts, Philosophy and Ethics of Borders — Aesthetic, philosophical and moral questions raised by borders and boundaries.
§ Youth, Education and Future Identities — The role of education in shaping the next generation's identities.
This special volume invites original research articles, essays, and comparative works from scholars in language and linguistics, literature and cultural studies, and related Humanities disciplines. It is conceived as an Open Access, peer-reviewed contribution to inclusive scholarship.
