LE CONFLIT À L’INTERFACE MÉTAPHYSIQUE DANS THÉRÈSE DESQUEYROUX DE FRANÇOIS MAURIAC

Abstract

Our study dwells on metaphysical interface, with regards to marriage in François Mauriac’s 
Thérèse Desqueyroux. Mauriac, an Existentialist Christian, maintained that in marriage, there 
was a vital ingredient needed, which unfortunately was lacking in his society. Marriage is an 
institution conceived by God for humanity. We know, however, that spouses get married for 
different reasons and that there is no perfect marriage. One’s conception of marriage, is not what 
he meets within the marriage, sometimes. Sometimes there are resounding successes; sometimes 
there are alarming failures, coupled with unimaginable conflicts. Marriage is affected by several 
factors. In this study, we are taking into consideration an aspect of these factors in Thérèse 
Desqueyroux. We have tried to carry out a textual analysis in our study. Here, it is a matter of 
metaphysical interface with mental conflict, where we consider the intellectual incompatibility of 
the spouses; the moral conflict discussing the discernment of good and bad, and then the spiritual 
conflict bordering on emotion and God. According to Mauriac, as long as people keep away from 
the truth, certain aspects of life, like marriage, will continue to fail. He maintains that for marriage 
to succeed, divinity itself is required, since it is a divine phenomenon.

Résumé 
Notre étude porte sur le conflit à l’interface métaphysique, par rapport au mariage dans Thérèse Desqueyroux de François Mauriac. Mauriac, un existentialiste chrétien, maintient qu’il y a un élément essentiel dont on a besoin dans le mariage, mais qui manque malheureusement, dans la société. Le mariage est une institution conçue par Dieu pour l’humanité. On sait cependant que les époux se marient pour des raisons diverses et qu’il n’y a pas de mariage parfait. Parfois, la conception idéale d’un mariage n’est pas ce que l’on y trouve. Tantôt il y a des succès magnifiques, tantôt il y a des échecs alarmants et tant de conflits inimaginables. Plusieurs facteurs influencent le mariage. Dans cet exposé, nous prenons comme point de départ un aspect de ces facteurs dans Thérèse Desqueyroux. Nous avons essayé de faire, dans notre étude, une analyse textuelle. Ici, il est question de l’interface métaphysique tenant compte de trois types de conflits : le conflit mental où l’on a considéré l’incompatibilité intellectuelle des époux ; le conflit moral en parlant du discernement du bien et du mal chez chacun et puis le conflit spirituel qui porte sur l’émotion et Dieu. Selon Mauriac, tant que les gens s’éloignent de la vérité, certains aspects de la vie comme le mariage échoueront. Il maintient que, pour que le mariage réussisse, étant un phénomène divin, il faut la divinité elle-même pour le maintenir.
