Abstract

In the contemporary educational landscape, teaching French as a foreign language requires a
paradigm shift from traditional, teacher-centered methods toward dynamic, learner-centered
pedagogies that integrate digital technologies and communicative approaches. This study
examines how French language instructors can innovate their teaching practices by combining
communicative methodologies with digital tools such as interactive platforms (TV5Monde,
Duolingo, and Quizlet), social media applications, and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven language
software. Drawing upon theoretical perspectives from constructivism (Vygotsky 1978),
communicative language teaching (Hymes 1972), and digital pedagogy (Prensky 2001;
Warschauer 2013), the article investigates how digital integration promotes learner autonomy,
motivation, and intercultural competence. Using examples from Francophone Africa and global
higher education contexts, it evaluates the affordances and limitations of technology-enhanced
learning environments. The findings highlight that while digital innovation enhances engagement
and pronunciation accuracy, challenges persist in terms of access, digital literacy, and teacher
preparedness. The study concludes that effective French teaching in the 21st century must combine
humanistic and digital approaches, fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and cultural empathy
among learners.
