Abstract

This article examines the role of digital language movements in Nigeria and their contribution to
multilingual inclusion in the country’s digital environment. Despite growing scholarly attention
to digital activism, there remains a limited theoretical understanding of how such movements
shape multilingual inclusion in postcolonial, linguistically diverse contexts such as Nigeria. This
study addresses this gap by adopting a theoretical approach grounded in existing literature and
conceptual analysis. Drawing on secondary data from scholarly publications, policy documents,
and documented cases of online language advocacy, the study does not seek to quantify outcomes
but to critically interpret patterns and implications of digital engagement. The analysis is carried
out through thematic and discourse-based examination of existing sources to identify recurring
dynamics, challenges, and potentials within digital language movements. The findings suggest
that digital advocacy has contributed to increasing the visibility of language rights, fostering
community–policy dialogues, and influencing emerging policy considerations. However,
persistent structural challenges, including underfunding, limited political will, and unequal digital
access, continue to constrain these efforts, particularly for rural populations and minority language
speakers. While digital language movements are gradually reshaping national discourse on
linguistic inclusion, their long-term impact depends on sustained institutional support, effective
policy implementation, and the development of inclusive multilingual digital infrastructures.
