Cryogenic treatment (CT) is the post-treatment process applied after conventional heat treatment process in steel. It is a process of using materials (structural steel grades) at a very low temperature. It involves subjecting materials to an extreme low temperature. When structural steels are subjected to cryogenic treatment, it will improve the mechanical and physical properties of the steel. The noticeable enhancements observed in materials subjected to cryogenic treatment are increased thermal conductivity, increased in dimensional stability, toughness, increased in wear resistance, fatigue resistance, increased in hardness, reduce residual stress. The cryogenic treatment temperature at which hardened material is further cooled may range from -80℃ to -196℃. Cryogenic treatment helps in converting retained austenite to martensite and also refining of grain structure of structural steels. The aim of this paper is to carry out a review of cryogenic strategies and its influence on mechanical properties of structural steel grades. The review paper discussed cryogenic treatment procedure, comparison of various mechanical properties as well as influence of cryogenic treatment on structural steel grades.
