Abstract

Historical evidence shows that in pre-colonial times, Egwu Imo Ọka served as a critical period for fostering social cohesion among the people of Ọka. The festival was characterized by the renewal of kinship ties, as brothers reconnected with brothers, friends with friends, relatives with kin, and in-laws with in-laws. Through this cultural celebration, the Ọka people sustained strong interpersonal relationships and communal harmony. It was regarded as a season of collective joy and cultural reaffirmation in Ọka town. However, contemporary realities reveal a significant departure from this ideal. Currently, familial and communal bonds have weakened such that brothers are estranged from one another, relatives no longer interact, and friendships have diminished. Moreover, participation in Egwu Imo Ọka is now largely dominated by non-indigenes residing in Ọka, while many indigenes withdraw and remain indoors during the festival period. The present celebration is also associated with a rise in violent incidents, including assault, life-threatening attacks, homicide, and bloodshed. These developments constitute the motivation for this study. The objective of this research is to identify strategies for curbing the criminal activities associated with the festival and to propose measures for restoring _Egwu Imo Ọka to its original status as a platform for unity and social interaction. This study adopts a survey research design and a review of relevant literature related to the subject matter. Findings indicate that the social vices currently affecting Egwu Imo Ọka are not primarily attributable to the indigenous Ọka people, but are largely perpetrated by non-indigenes resident in Ọka. It is anticipated that this study will contribute to efforts aimed at restoring Egwu Imo Ọka to its traditional form, particularly with respect to the values of relationship building and communal solidarity that it embodies. Consequently, the study recommends that custodians of culture and other relevant stakeholders of Egwu Imo Ọka collaborate to promote and revitalize the cultural significance of the festival in contemporary society through increased scholarly research and sustained community engagement.
