Abstract

The possessive adjective is used in the language to indicate possession. Though present in different languages, its mode of functioning varies across languages. This work sets out to do a contrastive study of this grammatical element in the two languages-French and Igbo, with a view to identifying the areas of similarities and differences at the linguistic levels of morphology, syntax and semantics. Based on Lado’s contrastive theory, those areas of divergence would constitute some learning difficulties to the Igbo learner of French as a foreign language. This study, it is believed, will be of great benefit to both the Igbo learners of French and their teachers.
