LES NOUVELLES VARIANTES DU PLAGIAT DANS L’ENSEIGNEMENT UNIVERSITAIRE AU NIGERIA

Abstract

The phenomenon of plagiarism also known as academic theft has long been in existence. However, the digital age has profoundly favoured its growth so much so that, today, a good number of countries in the world including Nigeria are familiar with new variants of plagiarism, which has become a global scourge. In Nigeria and elsewhere, academic integrity is, presently, weakening drastically. This is what motivated the present study titled: "New Variants of Plagiarism in University Teaching in Nigeria,” which seeks: to explore new trends of plagiarism in University teaching and scientific research in Nigeria; to establish the existence or absence of mechanisms put
in place to detect and sanction cases of scientific plagiarism in Nigeria and to propose effective strategies to be adopted for curbing or exterminating the phenomenon. The study makes use of the descriptive method and experiential knowledge. The findings of this study show that plagiarism has attained a pronounced height at the university level in Nigeria; that acts of plagiarism are committed not only by students but also by university lecturers, researchers, and even professors and that certain individuals simply turn themselves into professional plagiarists. To combat this academic menace, the following measures are proposed: introduction of “Plagiarism” as a compulsory course; provision and compulsory use of Anti-plagiarism software in the various departments and the scientific journals; having recourse to academic and administrative jurisdiction; and putting in place more stringent measures for evaluation of articles for publication in open access scientific journals.

Le phénomène du plagiat connu aussi comme le vol académique existait depuis la nuit des temps. Pourtant, l’ère numérique a bien favorisé sa croissance en sorte qu’aujourd’hui, un assez bon nombre de pays du monde dont le Nigeria connaisse de nouvelles variantes du plagiat, qui est devenu un fléau mondial. Au Nigeria et partout ailleurs, l’intégrité académique s’affaiblit de nos jours, de manière rigoureuse. Voilà ce qui a motivé la présente étude qui vise : explorer les nouvelles frontières du plagiat à cette ère numérique dans l’enseignement universitaire et la recherche scientifique au Nigeria ; établir l’existence ou l’absence des mécanismes mis en place pour détecter et sanctionner les cas du plagiat scientifique au Nigéria ; et proposer des stratégies efficaces à adopter pour combattre le phénomène. Cette recherche adopte la méthode descriptive et s’appuie sur des expériences personnelles. D’après les constatations de cette étude, le plagiat a connu une croissance marquée dans l’enseignement et la recherche universitaires au Nigeria. Il a été découvert que les actes du plagiat se commettent non seulement par les étudiants mais aussi par les enseignants universitaires, les chercheurs, voire les professeurs titulaires et que certains individus se font carrément plagiaires professionnels. Pour combattre cette menace académique les mesures suivantes sont proposées : l’introduction du sujet de plagiat comme cours obligatoire ; l’approvisionnement et l’utilisation obligatoire des logiciels anti-plagiats dans l’enseignement universitaire et dans la recherche scientifique ; le recours à la juridiction académique et administrative et la mise en place des mesures plus strictes pour l’évaluation des articles à publier dans des revues scientifiques en libre accès.
