Exploring the Timeless Depiction of Human Flaws in Jonathan Swift’s Gullivers’ Travels: A Stylistic Analysis

This paper takes a stylistic analysis of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travel, examining how the author’s use of language contributes to its theme of timeless depiction of the universality of human flaws. The study adopted a content analysis approach where the text was closely read and studied. Though randomly selected, the study examines Swift’s use of irony, satire, hyperbole, symbolism, allusion and repetition as well as various sentence types and grammatical structures to critique human nature. The analysis brings to the fore that Swift’s use of language are not only intentional but also deliberate and serves as an effective resources for highlighting the absurdity and complexity of human nature, rending Gulliver’s Travels a powerful and enduring critique of human flaws. The outcomes of this study demonstrate the significance of the author’s novel as a timeless commentary on human nature, with implications for our understandings of the human condition in contemporary society.
