Abstract

This chapter examines the implementation of authentic assessment in STEM
education as a critical pathway for bridging the persistent gap between educational
research and classroom practice. Drawing on research–practice partnership
perspectives, the chapter conceptualizes authentic assessment as an approach that
emphasizes real-world relevance, performance-based tasks, and meaningful
application of knowledge and skills. It explores key strategies for authentic
assessment in STEM, including performance tasks, project-based assessments, peer
assessment and feedback, and technology-enhanced assessment practices. The
chapter also addresses practical challenges associated with implementation such as
scalability, feasibility, assessment literacy, digital inequities, and academic integrity
while highlighting evidence-based solutions informed by empirical studies across
different educational institutions. Case studies from higher education and STEM
related professional programs illustrate how collaborative design, institutional
support, and technology integration can enable sustainable and context-responsive
assessment practices. Overall, the chapter argues that authentic assessment, when
supported by strong research–practice partnerships and continuous professional
development, can enhance student engagement, deepen learning, and better align
STEM education with contemporary societal and workforce demands.
