Abstract

Metaphor is a literary style that gives another meaning to a word by referring to something that is considered to have similar characteristics to it. It is used in day-to-day language and in literary books. The analogy used to give meaning is based on the culture of the source language. Consequently, can a metaphor be translated without reference to the culture of the language? In this work, randomly selected from the internet were analysed. The aim of this work is to study and identify the role of culture and context in the translation of metaphors. Hence culture and context play important role in understanding metaphors. We arrived at a conclusion that culture is sine qua non in the translation of metaphors.
