ÉTUDE CRITIQUE DE LA TRADUCTION FRANÇAISE DE LE LION ET LA PERLE DE WOLE SOYINKA

Abstract

This paper focuses on the French translation of a work by Wole Soyinka, The Lion and the Jewel, by J. Chuto and Philippe Laburthe-Tolra. We try to point out some weaknesses in the translation and to underline the discrepancies between the target text and the source text. Using the translation procedures suggested by Vinay and Darbelnet, the study attempts to identify and correct the inaccuracies in the translation to help the readers to grasp the message of the author of the source text. The study also draws the attention of translator learners to some of the problems they may encounter in literary translation, especially the translation of a play. It will also help French-speaking readers to better understand the work. Data that was collected from different pages of the book to back up our findings were analysed and the results helped us draw conclusions.

Résumé
Ce travail porte sur la traduction française d’une œuvre de Wole Soyinka, The Lion and the Jewel, par J. Chuto et Philippe Laburthe-Tolra. Nous essayons de relever certaines faiblesses dans la traduction faite et souligner les désaccords entre le texte cible et le texte original. En se servant des procédés de la traduction suggérés par Vinay et Darbelnet, l’étude tente de relever et de corriger les infidélités dans la traduction faite afin d’aider les lecteurs à bien saisir le message de l’auteur du texte de départ. L’étude attire aussi l’attention des apprenants traducteurs sur certains problèmes qu'ils peuvent rencontrer dans la traduction littéraire, surtout la traduction d’une pièce théâtrale.
Elle aidera aussi les lecteurs francophones à mieux comprendre l’œuvre. Les données recueillies dans les différentes pages du livre pour étayer nos résultats ont été analysées et les résultats nous ont permis de tirer des conclusions.
