Abstract

In the field of translation, studies have shown that most translated literary texts expose some level of infidelity in re-expressing all linguistics and extra linguistics exigencies embedded in the original text. In view of this, this study tries to carry out analysis of the translation of Purple Hibiscus written by Chimamanda Adichie which was translated into French as L’Hibiscus Pourpre by Mona de Pracontal. The study gears towards identifying the causes of this problem and therefore, proffering solutions to improve the quality of the translation. To carry out the analysis, we shall examine instances of faithfulness and unfaithfulness found in the translated text. To achieve this goal, we shall adopt an interpretive-based approach that was proposed by Jean Delisle. The study revealed that Pracontal showed high competence in mastery of the two languages as well as artistic creativity in translating most linguistic and non linguistic exigencies embedded in the original text. On the contrary, the study revealed that the translator could not translate effectively some linguistic and extra linguistics nuances into the target language. From these findings, we call on the indigenous translators to make effort in embarking on translation of literary works domesticated to our local environments.
